"One of the parents even called me and said her daughter can't think of anything else," Ms. She said the students at the Middle School are excited about the pen friends program. Daniel said the sixth grade students have been studying Africa in their social studies classes and so have some background to work with in asking questions to children from Tanzania. She said it takes 2 1/2 to three weeks to send a letter to Tanzania by mail and six to seven weeks to ship packages there. She said Tanzania is the 12th poorest country in the world.

She told them she needed to have a lot of vaccinations before going to Africa to prevent diseases, like malaria and yellow fever. She told the students that a lot of people have heard of Tanzania because of its Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa. Panzarella said there are 350 students in a building that has just five classrooms and seven teachers. "I feel like they will be learning more than they would be in just the four walls of a classroom."Īt the school where the Somerset students will be making "pen friends," Ms. Daniel said the pen pals program will really reinforce the importance of grammar and spelling to the Middle School students, since they will be writing to students in another country. She told them to represent Somerset positively when communicating with the African people. She said she would post a few simple Swahili phrases on the website that the Somerset students could use in their letters. She said the Somerset students can also post questions to ask the Tanzanian students on the website. Panzarella said she would be posting photos of her experiences at the school on the website. She said she would post possible topics to write about for the pen friends. Panzarella has also set up a website for the internship she will be doing in Africa under a program called Cross Cultural Solutions and on it, there is space dedicated to the Somerset Middle School students where they can post notes or photographs. Panzarella said she will edit the letters so the students can understand them. Because the English of the African students, whose first language is Swahili, will be very basic, Ms. Panzarella said the school does not have online service, so she will be going to an Internet cafe to retrieve the letters.
